After a string of failed relationships with older men and the deception of her recent break-up, Nana first chooses to follow Junko’s advice and repress her crush on Shoji by staying just friends despite Shoji’s own feelings and flirting attempts.

A few months later, during a beach trip, Nana and Shoji learn about Kyosuke and Junko’s (now a couple) future plans to go to university in Tokyo. At the thought of potentially finding herself alone, now that Shoji plans to go to Tokyo as well, Nana entertains the idea of studying any type of art degree in the capital to be able to follow her friends. Despite her intense studying and her many applications, she ends up failing her college entry.

After a fight with Shoji in the middle of Tokyo, she gets lost on her way back to her hotel and unexpectedly encounter her ex-boyfriend, Takashi. They go for a drink where Nana seems to find closure when she receives a call from Kyosuke telling her about Shoji’s feelings and warning her that he and Junko are currently looking for her. They end up meeting and going back to their hotel room where Nana promises to meet up in Tokyo the following year, as a reward for Shoji getting into university. Following Shoji’s earlier remarks of her childish approach to moving in Tokyo without money nor a plan, she promises to come and find him as a financially independent women, to which he agrees and finally kisses her.

In the winter of 1998, Nana Osaki gleefully celebrates the end of a successful concert with her group Blast. On their way home, they part ways with drummer Yasushi Takagi who takes home their drunk guitarist Nobuo Terashima, but not before egging his friend and bassist Ren Honjo, to tell Nana about “the thing”.

In their shared apartment, Ren and Nana reminisce on their first meeting, the beginning of their relationship and their punk rock band, Nana’s childhood and her faint memory of her runaway mother. Later into the night, while they start talking about their dreams and clashing plans for the future, Ren informs Nana that he soon will be going to Tokyo to join a new group. The morning after, Yasu breaks the news to a hurt and disappointed Nobu.

While the rest of the group ponders on the future of Blast, Nana comes to term with her decision of either following Ren to Tokyo, or pursue her own independent dream of becoming a professional singer through Blast and their local success.

While they split up at the train station, they end up meeting again in their search for an apartment. To slip the rent and save some money, they mutually agree to share the apartment 707 (7 read as nana, なな in Japanese) and move in together.

While Nana O. questions his younger appearance and his seemingly absent parents, he passes his audition as a bassist with flying colors. As Nobu and Nana O. recognize his inspiration from Ren Honjo’s guitar style, Nana accepts his application on one condition : to surpass Ren.

Meanwhile Nana K., now nicknamed Hachi (short for Hachikō) by her new friends for her enthusiasm and loyalty, faces financially difficulties when her workplace closes down while Shoji gets acquainted with the new girl at work, Sachiko Kawamura.

To cheer herself up, she gets reminded of the concert tickets in her hometown for Trapnest, her favourite rock band, that she bought a while ago. Now that bringing Shoji as her date is out of the question, she desperately looks for someone to go with her.

At their 1st concert in Tokyo, Blast encounter Misato Uehara, one of their first and longest fan. As a show of gratitude, Nana invites her to stay and spend a day in Disneyland with her which doesn’t sit well with Hachi who feels left out and invaded by strangers in her daily life.

After a few exchanges with Misato and Nobu, Hachi ends up learning about the identity of Blast ex-bassist and his relationship with Nana. The new found information motivates her to bring Nana to the Trapnest concert, in the hopes that her front row seats will allow Ren to see and meet Nana again. After some consideration, Nana agrees to go, gathering up her courage until the last second to come near the stage.

Once she learns about his scheme, Nana gets mad at Yasu who promptly reminds her that she’s the one holding back from true closure between them. Proud and resolved, Nana agrees to contact Ren to meet and end it for good.

Back at his hotel, they have an emotional reunion where they agree to rekindle their relationship without living together and by letting Nana’s career be her top priority, per her own request. Following this news, Blast happily tries to meet-up with Ren to hang out together, while Hachi uses this new found connection to ask for an autograph from Takumi. Meanwhile, Nana seems more determined than ever to make their debut happen, tightening up rehearsal rules for both herself and her band members.

At apartment 707, Blast and half of Trapnest finally meet, with Takumi as a surprise visitor for Hachi. That night, old childhood friends Yasu, Ren and Takumi exchange stories from their old days with surprising revelations for the rest of the group.

A few days later, the remaining members of Trapnest learn about the meeting and ask for news from their old acquaintance Yasu. Surprised by his new found wish to become a professional musician, Reira wonders out loud why he suddenly put aside his promising career in law while Ren listens silently.

Back at apartment 707, Nana is having dinner with a morose Hachi. In the middle of the night, they receive a surprise visit from Takumi, a shock to Nana who immediately flees to Yasu and then finishes the night at Ren’s. More and more sadden to “loose the people she loves to Trapnest”, she softly accepts, to her boyfriend great surprise, his proposal to come live with him.

Feeling left out by her friends stuck in a meeting with the label, Hachi goes to spend the night with Takumi. To combat her own loneliness, Reira makes a call to her new found playmate.

During Blast celebration party, Hachi and Nobu confess to each other and make their relationship official with mixed reactions from their entourage. Later that night, Hachi’s breakup phone call with Takumi doesn’t quite goes as plan and ends up in a fight. While learning more about Reira and Takumi’s bond through Yasu’s stories, 15 year old Shin is also confronted for the first time by his member about his sketchy background and his lack of caution towards his illegal activities and protecting his privacy.

Signed under Gaia for a month now, Blast works hard to make their debut happens. While the group is hopeful for their success, except for Yasu, Gaia’s executives are more sceptical due to the lack of demand for their genre and how common and outdated their style and sound are for the market.

After a couple of failed attempts to get in touch with Hachi during the summer, Takumi makes an unexpected visit to an ill Hachi. Angry, she reveals to him her recent relationship status and her latest decision. Without a word, Takumi makes a call to Nobu to sort out Hachi’s future. Next to her friend, Nana overhears everything and crumbles while realising the only option left for Hachi, Nobu and Takumi. She runs away to find confort at Yasu’s where Naoki was visiting. Now alone on his way to the 707 flat, Nobu goes to confront Hachi who remains silent and lethargic, leaving him without an answer regarding their future.

Late at night in her hotel room, Reira struggles to come up with lyrics to Ren’s new love song. Meanwhile Shin has a hard time accepting the realities that come with a pro debut, and the lack of time for passion and fun that comes with it. While they mutually help each other out, Shin seems, for the first time in their meetings, to show signs of sincerity.

Without a word to her now former roommate, Hachi follows Takumi to her room to endure his moods and anger. Frozen at the news in the living room, Nana looses it at the sound and storms off to Ren’s place, but not before accidentally breaking the precious pair of glass she first bought with Hachi.

Trapnest start the one-week recording session of their new single where Takumi shares the news of his marriage to Hachi and her unborn child. In complete shock, Reira leaves the studio without telling anyone. Worried, Ren sends Reira’s manager Mari to her search while Takumi calmly delays the vocal session. Hidden somewhere in the streets of Tokyo, Reira tearfully calls Shin, asking for Yasu’s number who runs to her rescue at his apartment.

Back at the studio, Reira’s absence is starting to cause issues, prompting Ren to take the opportunity of reprimanding Takumi for his cold attitude towards their singer. They both receives a call from Yasu who wants a word with Takumi himself.

At Search locals, a weekly tabloid, chief editor Kudou is getting angry after the one-month stalking of Ren and Nana comes to a dead end. Determinated to provoke Blast debut and pit them against Trapnest, he changes strategy and assignes his photographer, Minoru Kurada, to the couple’s hometown to dig out more information.

Cookie Music quickly decides to relocate Trapnest two-weeks jacket shooting to London, rather than staying in Japan, to let the heat die down.

Ren's growing insecurities push his bad habits to resurface, which doesn't go unnoticed by Reira and Yasu. To appease his mind, he decides to listen to his friend and follows his heart. Reira finds confort and happiness with her daily correspondence with Shin throughout their time apart. Back in Japan, Takumi and Hachi formalize step by step their marriage and relationship.

Cookie Music also extends to Blast an invitation to a joint birthday party for Shin and Reira. Despite their initial reluctance, especially at the idea of meeting Takumi there, his band members quickly agree to it, convinced by Shin's happiness at having his first birthday celebration. After giving it some thoughts, Reira personally invits Hachi to her birthday party.

Tired of his anger, heartbreak and unrequited feelings, Nobu gives into the charms of the most popular guest of the night, Yuri Kousaka, and firmly decides to move on.

The punk band officially dethrones Trapnest, who enjoy a rare day off. While Takumi peacefully spends his time at home with his fiancée, Ren and Reira escape the pressure for a day and flee to their hometown.

Miu gets harassed by their management when Yuri runs away from her job again. Yasu takes this as an opportunity to spend some time with Miu while Nobu learns more about his girlfriend and how to make their relationship work.

Thanks to their leader's protection, Ren and Reira take the time to deal with the consequences of their actions. If Reira immediately ends it with Shin to protect her group and career, Ren is confronted by Nana's fears, incompatible with Trapnest's future.

Blast starts to decline in the charts which worries their songwriter Nobu, whose work keeps getting rejected by their producers. On the other hand, Search Magazine increase their attempts to create some publicity for the group by going after Nana's birth mother.

In the middle of the chaos, Blast release their first album, Black Spot.

Eagger to keep the tour going, Nana asks Ren to replace Shin as their bassist. Angry, he refuses to Nana's despair. Against all odds, Gaia stops Blast activities and offers her to debut as a soloist.

Ren's personal struggles are becoming more and more known within his staff and co-workers who each try to help him in their own way.

Shin gets released early on good behaviour with probation. Out of guilt and shame, he locks himself in his room when his bandmates try to celebrate his return. Determinated to take his career seriously, he rejects Takumi's offer to come meet Reira to heal her heartbreak. Out of solution to preserve his singer's motivation, Trapnest's leader personally grants her her long-time wish.

In the future, Hachi discusses with Junko her desire to withdraw her divorce procedure. Back home, she gets a call from London from Takumi who informs her that he has find, with Naoki's help, the bar she send him. Before he can hang up, Hachi promptly ask for news about Ren to which Takumi swiftly assures her that he's doing fine.

After his visit, he tries to make it right by his team by asking Takumi's permission to quit Trapnest, which he categorically refuses. Full of worries for him, Reira runs away, forcing the label to halt all activities and asks their team to give some time off to their guitarist.

On the evening eve of Nana's birthday, Ren takes the road to bring back Reira to Tokyo and save Trapnest. Before leaving, despite Hachi's warnings, he promises her to follow his desires and go back to Nana for her birthday. Closely followed by a pair of paparazzi, Ren speeds up under the snow to loose their track. At the sudden mention of Blast on the radio, he crashes onto the wall of his old apartment after having an hallucination of Nana.

In the future in a Londonian flat, little Ren and Takumi are woken up by the door bell. Naoki came to announce his intention to go check if the mysterious singer from the bar really is Nana, in the hopes of reuniting the Ichinose family and end Hachi's quest for her missing friend. While Takumi dismisses his idea, he also lets his ex-bandmate know, to his surprise, that Reira has started to sing again but only to the sound of Ren's guitar.

Takumi, Hachi, Miu and the Blast members head to Ren's hometown after hearing about his accident. Yasu and Mai fly to Osaka where Nana is having a radio interview, to give her the news of Ren's death before she can hear it from the press. At the same time, Naoki goes after Reira to bring her back to the funeral hall. Filled with guilt and grief, she falls apart after hearing some harsh words from Shin.

In Osaka, Yasu manages to bring back Nana with him, to let her say her last goodbye to her fiancé. Completely lethargic, she remains numb and silent during the wake and goes to isolate herself when Kinoshita, Ren's assistant, gives her her birthday present retrieved from the car crash.

Back in Ren's hometown, in an hospital, Takumi is trying to encourage a bedridden Reira to eat. She receives the visit of Naoki and Yasu who are surprised to learn that she does not seem to remember Ren's death.

Yasu takes the opportunity to visit his mother who's being taken care of by Shion. The fanclub president informs him that she recently talked to the Uehara family who would like to meet Nana, particularly her estranged mother.
