Gatchaman (科学忍者隊ガッチャマンcode: ja is deprecated , Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman) adalah sebuah kelompok pahlawan super yang ditulis dan diilustrasikan oleh Tatsuo Yoshida. Pada awal pembentukannya kelompok ini terdiri dari 5 orang: Ken, Joe, Jun, Jinpei, dan Ryu. Pertama kali mengudara di stasiun televisi Jepang pada tahun 1972, serial Gatchaman merupakan salah satu animasi yang paling dikenal selain serial Casshern, Hurricane Polymer, dan Tekkaman.

Meski demikian, Gatchaman tak hanya sekadar serial televisi, melainkan telah menjadi fenomena multimedia internasional dengan berbagai produk, seperti: film, permainan video, pertunjukan aksi hidup di atas panggung, dan iklan.

Deskripsi

Gatchaman bukan film fiksi ilmiah dan fantasi karena sebagian besar diangkat dari cerita fiksi. Tema cerita melibatkan tokoh-tokoh ilmuwan yang memang benar-benar pernah ada, tetapi dengan tambahan tokoh-tokoh fiktif sebagai pelengkap cerita.

Periode produksi Gatchaman dibagi dua, yaitu periode Showa (sebelum tahun 1980) dan periode Heisei (setelah tahun 1994). Pada Gatchaman periode Showa, cerita antara Gatchaman satu dengan yang lain di setiap serialnya berhubungan. Mereka diceritakan berasal dari planet yang sama. Sedangkan sejak periode Heisei, cerita mulai berkembang dan lepas dari hubungan Gatchaman sebelumnya.

Sebutan Gatchaman pertama kali digunakan pada tahun 1972, serial ini diproduksi oleh Tatsunoko Production saat unit studio animasi tersebut ditutup. Pada tahun 1978, serial sekuel di Gatchaman berjudul Gatchaman II dirilis. Serial anime ketiga berjudul Gatchaman Fighter pertama kali ditayangkan pada tahun 1979.

Sejak tahun 1978, serial Gatchaman dipopulerkan oleh Amerika Serikat dengan judul "Battle of the Planets / G-Force" dan berlanjut sampai serial Gatchaman yang terbaru. Pada tahun ini, Battle of the Planets dipublikasikan oleh Sandy Frank Entertainment di Amerika Serikat, serial ini adalah kegunaan panjangnya sementara dari Gatchaman di Jepang pada tahun 1970-an. Pada tahun 1986, serial adaptasi di Battle of the Planets berjudul G-Force: Guardians of Space dirilis oleh Sparklin' Entertainment dan Turner Program Services.

Pada tahun 1994, Tatsunoko Pro dan Nippon Columbia merilis serial OVA di Gatchaman.

Gatchaman luar Jepang

Gatchaman begitu populer di luar Jepang hingga dibuatkan Gatchaman versi Barat di Amerika Serikat, Australia dan Taiwan. Di Taiwan, serial Gatchaman berjudul "Ke Xue Xiao Fei Xia" (Scientific Flying Fantasy Warriors) yang ditayangkan oleh saluran televisi China Television dengan versi sulih suara di bahasa Mandarin pada tahun 1977. Di Amerika Serikat, serial Gatchaman berjudul Battle of the Planets (BOTP) ditayangkan dengan versi sulih suara di bahasa Inggris pada tahun 1978, dan kemudian disiarkan juga pada tahun 1986 sebagai G-Force: Guardians of Space. Kombinasi di Gatchaman II dan Gatchaman F berjudul Eagle Riders ditayangkan pada tahun 1996.

Serial anime

Serial anime di Gatchaman yang dibuat oleh Tatsuo Yoshida dan Tatsunoko Production. Serial yang terdiri dari 105 episode ini merupakan hasil produksi bersama Fuji Television, dan disiarkan di Jepang mulai tanggal 1 Oktober 1972 sampai dengan tanggal 29 September 1974.^[1] Serial ini adalah produksi pertama di serial Gatchaman.
