Shimun XVI Yohannan

Shimun XVI Yohannan (Qodchanis, ... – Qodchanis, 1820) è stato un vescovo cristiano orientale siro, patriarca della Chiesa d'Oriente della linea di Shimun dal 1780 al 1820.

Biografia

Poche sono le informazioni su questo patriarca orientale.^[1] Secondo le tradizionali cronotassi dei patriarchi della Chiesa d'Oriente, succedette nel 1780 a Shimun XV Mikhail Mukhtas e morì nel 1820 circa^[2] nella residenza patriarcale di Qodchanis.^[3] È storicamente documentato in alcuni colophon datati dal 1784 al 1815.^[3]

Alla sua morte, la Chiesa d'Oriente fu affidata al pronipote Shimun XVII Abraham.^[4] Secondo il principio dell'ereditarietà, la sede patriarcale era affidata al Natar kursya, successore designato del patriarca regnante, che era sempre un suo parente prossimo.^[5]^[6]

Nel 1804, con la morte di Elia Isho'yahb, ultimo patriarca nestoriano della linea di Elia con sede a Alqosh, Shimun XVI restò l'unico patriarca della Chiesa assira d'Oriente.^[7]

^ Secondo Daniel D Benjamin (The Patriarchs of the Church of the East, translated from Assyrian into English by Youel A Baaba, United States of America, 2005, pp. 5-6) è dubbia la cronologia dei patriarchi di Qodchanis dal 1700 al 1903, epoca in cui sono documentati solo 5 prelati, ciascuno con un periodo di patriarcato di circa 40 anni: …such neat division claiming equal duration of tenures raises some doubt. One is led to speculate that for the 203 years in question, the identity of the patriarchs and the period of their patriarchal tenure was not known, except for the name of five of them.
